Mark Knickelbein writes Lutheran church music for choir, organ, and piano. His focus is on using music to illuminate the text as the Gospel speaks clearly to the ears and hearts of hearers. His music has been described as effectively bridging a variety of styles, writing just challenging enough for the average church musician to stretch while satisfying for the advanced musician.

He has recently collaborated to a great extent with hymnwriter Lisa M. Clark. Three recent choral publications are such collaborations, along with dozens of unpublished hymns written together.
