Valerie Hess I am an author, church musician, retreat speaker, and college instructor for Spring Arbor University in their Masters of Spiritual Formation and Leadership (MSFL) program.

I am on the Writer’s Committee for the Lutheran Arts Center and am currently the Coordinator of Music Ministries for Trinity Lutheran church in Boulder, Colorado. I was involved with Renovare for over 20 years.

Besides my work with the Spiritual Disciplines, I love playing the pipe organ, harpsichord, recorder, and singing. I enjoy traveling, especially in the Southwest USA as well as internationally. I experiment in various visual art mediums. I enjoy playing Mah Jongg (American). I live in a National Historic Landmark community in Boulder, Colorado.

My writing and speaking primarily focus on issues related to spiritual formation through music (worship as spiritual formation) and the spiritual disciplines.

My books are:\"Habits of a Child’s Heart: Raising Your Kids with the Spiritual Disciplines\" (co-authored with Dr. Marti Watson Garlett, 2004), \"Spiritual Disciplines Devotional: A Year of Readings\" (2007) and \"The Life of the Body: Physical Well-Being and Spiritual Formation\" (co-authored with Lane M. Arnold, 2012). Several of my articles have appeared in various publications including \"The Lutheran,\" \"The American Recorder Society,\" and \"The American Organist.\"

In 2015, one of my poems was selected for a downtown Boulder art installation.
