Bethany provides a wide range of opportunities for students to engage with the arts. This includes the college’s award-winning media arts program, which focuses on broadcasting, video production, motion graphics, and animation. The campus also has a rich background in the fine arts tradition with studio art, music, and theatre programs.
Bethany’s art programs enrich not only the campus but also the Mankato community. Bethany presents the annual Speechless Film Festival every spring in downtown Mankato. This community-supported international festival event gives students an opportunity to screen their work alongside professional films from all over the world.
New technology, industry connections, and a focus on creative thinking prepare Bethany graduates to break into the creative industry. Students in the media arts program use graphic design, video, motion graphics, illustration, art, web design, and animation in a number of personal and professional creative endeavors. Bethany’s media arts graduates have gone on to work for several agencies and networks in California and New York, as well as regional agencies and local networks.
Bethany media arts students work in teams to produce highly ambitious projects; the most notable of which is a student-made animated music video for the song “Midnight on the Interstate” by acclaimed Duluth-based band Trampled by Turtles. The poignant stop-motion video premiered on Conan O’Brien’s blog and has received nearly 275,000 views on youtube. The video was listed as one of the top 10 Minnesota music videos of 2013 by citypages.com.
The media arts program fosters a strong relationship with PromaxBDA, the leading global association for entertainment marketing professionals. In addition to attending the organization’s conferences, Bethany students frequently win PromaxBDA contests and have used these awards to land internships at such prestigious organizations as Paramount Pictures and The Ant Farm.
Bethany students produce live broadcasts for Charter Communication and Minnesota State University, Mankato Division I Hockey using Bethany’s state-of-the-art high-definition production trailer. This program is unique in that the hockey broadcast is entirely student-run, and many students are involved as early as their freshman year. This leads students to careers at a variety of prestigious and local networks, including ESPN and Fox Sports North.
Studio Art, Theatre, & Music
The fine arts play a significant role at Bethany. A large percentage of the student body is active in the arts, ranging from the concert choir to Theatre Physics. Music and theatre performance groups hold auditions open to every student. Private lessons for vocal instrumental performance are available to all who are interested. Personal studio space is reserved for each painting and sculpture student. These are among the advantages of a smaller college that values and encourages creativity.
The world needs Christian artists, actors, musicians, and technicians. The Bethany fine arts faculty assists students to enter the arts community with confidence and insight. It is their goal to enable each student to engage critically with the arts, develop and hone their creative gifts, learn the discipline required of the creative professional, and ultimately participate in the creation of American culture.
