On May 31, 2019 a HymnWriters' Roundtable was hosted by the Center for Church Music at Concordia University Chicago. This event was made possible by a generous grant from the Writers' Committee of LutheranArts and additional support from the center itself and a private donor.
The Roundtable gathered Lutheran hymn (text) writers from the ELCA, WELS, and the LCMS as well as a member of an independent Lutheran church. The full day of discussion was moderated by Dr. David Rogner, chair of the English department at CUC and generated an informative, visionary and energetic back-and-forth on topics ranging from the purpose of Christian hymns, favorite hymn writers, examples (from their own work) of good and not-so-good efforts, the relationship between hymns and poetry, how congregational song engages the eye, the ear, the intellect, the heart and spirit of the believer, as well as glimpses into each individual's creative process.
At the close of the day, all of the participants expressed hope for a follow-up event in 2020.
